The Dementors In Our Midst: Thoughts from Harry Potter Books

I have read and watched most Harry Potter books, not all of them so I cannot call myself a fan. However, I find some of the creatures in J. K. Rowling’s book interesting as some of their characteristics resemble humans. As a follow up to my recent post on insecure people, I thought to continue this post which has been in my drafts folder for some time now.

Feeling low and affected one time by people around who seemed to suck the positive energy and happiness in me, I remembered the Dementors in Harry Potter Book 3 and saw the similarities. I am generally a happy and positive person and I find it exhausting and I hated that feeling.

So. Dementors. Let’s see who they are.

Who Are the Dementors

Harry Potter’s Dementors are described to be “non-beings and dark creatures, considered one of the foulest to inhabit the world. They feed off human happiness, and cause depression and despair to anyone near them. They can also consume a person’s soul, leaving their victims in a permanent vegetative state. They are often referred to as “soul-sucking fiends” and are known to leave a person as an “empty-shell.”

Unfortunately, Dementors do not just exist in Hogwarts School. While they are a product of a creative mind, this type of people exist. How do we tell who they are?

  1. They complain a lot. Everything is too difficult, things are too complicated, life is hard. They use the excuse of “just expressing themselves” to vent out, not realizing that sometimes it is affecting the people around them already. The morale becomes low, some begin to look at things from the negative point of view and then agree. And then living just get sucked from these people.

  2. They intimidate. They make you feel less of yourself. They bully you. And you just might think that perhaps what they say is right. And you begin to appreciate yourself less. Then you doubt the power within you. Then you slowly become what they think you are.

  3. They love gossip and live in gossip. They wanted to know what’s going on around and revel in ugly and bad news for some people. They may act concerned and find out how you are, but in truth, you are nothing but an item in the Entertainment section to them. There is no compassion, only satisfaction in knowing that they are in a better state than the you are. They are relieved by your misery and feel contempt in your success.

  4. They fear and avoid change. Imagine if we have the ability to see our future? Would we still have the same drive, the same enthusiasm or the same zest as when we wake up and make our day? Stagnation is almost tantamount to death, as living is meant to be a journey of adventure and the only thing constant is change. When you refuse change, you let a part of you die.

  5. They are know-it-all beings who always have something to say. Not minding whether their opinion is welcome or not. Not considering what the other person feels. It is a pathetic case of foot in mouth disease that probably has no cure. They always have a solution for anything, probably they’d best fit politics and humanitarian organizations. Not to say that their ideas are always brilliant, it doesn’t matter to them, they just have to say something.

Patronus Charm Human Version

Interestingly, the article further says that no one has ever demonstrated the ability to kill a Dementor. They can only be driven away or temporarily kept at bay. One of the few ways to shield oneself from Dementors is by use of the difficult Patronus charm to fend them off. The charm summons a Patronus, the magical manifestation of good will and happiness, providing varied levels of protection against the Dementor’s influence, based on the caster’s strength as a wizard.

So how do we shield the sunshine from being blocked by a Dementor?

  1. Do not be an audience and/or participate in their drama. They can mumble and grumble, and you can leave too. You don’t have to hear what they say if you don’t like it. You don’t have to agree if you don’t. Leave. Fast.

  2. Think of happy thoughts, think of your own survival stories. Revisit and appreciate that power within you. Enhance your personality. Find something worthwhile to do.

  3. Surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you. Be with friends who encourage you, who challenge you and appreciates you as a person. Life is short, make each minute enjoyable.

  4. Be strong and do not let yourself be conquered by negativity. Don’t let them win. Protect your soul, don’t let it die.

Remember that Dementors could not be killed and their presence can only be weakened. They want your soul for it is that which gives essence to our being. They want us to become like they are – soulless, lifeless, dark.

Let your light shine bright. There is that power within you. Let is conquer the Dementors.
